Various compounds have been linked to increased openness in individuals. Scientific studies have shown links between compounds such as as psilocybin and marijuana on increased openness to experience in healthy individuals.
The hallucinogen psilocybin has been found to increase openness in some individuals if they experience mystical experiences while taking psilocybin.1
A study in 984 high school students, showed that increased usage of marijuana was tied to higher levels of openness to experience, as well as creativity, adventurousness, and novelty-seeking behavior.2The same trend has been witnessed in undergraduate students as well. In a study involving 148 male and 130 female undergraduate students, it was found that those with higher self-reported usages of marijuana tended to have higher scores on various creativity and adventuresomeness tests (as measured by self-report surveys).3
