The Science
of Ketones
The Science
of Ketones
Your Metabolism Is Under Attack
People who are metabolically unhealthy have less-than-ideal biomarkers, like blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels. Chronic diseases, such as diabetes or cardiovascular issues, are linked to poor metabolic health. These conditions are among the leading causes of death in the United States.
What Are Ketones?
Compared to other sources of energy like glucose or fat, ketones are a more efficient fuel that can produce more power while using less oxygen.
Ketone levels can be measured in a number of ways and are a key biomarker to assess metabolic health.
Return to an Ancient Source of Energy
At H.V.M.N., we believe that the best version of yourself starts with good metabolic health—and ketones are the answer. Working closely with the US military and leading universities, H.V.M.N. has unlocked the benefits of drinkable ketones, allowing you to return to an ancient source of energy, on demand.

Drink ketonesHow to Measure Ketone Levels
Eating a carb-restricted diet
Eating a carb-restricted diet reduces the amount of carbs that our body stores for energy. When our carb stores are depleted, our body will begin searching for other sources of fuel and start converting fat into ketones.
Exercising
Like intermittent fasting, exercise can speed up our body's process of burning carb stores. This triggers the body to start producing ketones for energy.
Intermittent Fasting
Like carb-restricted diets, intermittent fasting depletes our carb stores over time. During fasting periods, our body uses stored carbs for energy until they are depleted and switches to ketone production.
A Beginner's Guide
Blood Test
Blood tests use a handheld device and test strips to measure BHB, the primary ketone body that your body actually uses for fuel. Urine and breath tests measure other types of ketone bodies. As a result, blood tests are the most accurate way to measure meaningful ketone levels.
Breath Test
Breath tests use a special meter to measure acetone levels, a ketone body excreted through the breath. Breath tests measure acetone, a waste product, instead of BHB, the main ketone body used for fuel. As a result, they are not as accurate as blood tests. Food and drinks like gum, coffee, and garlic could also impact test results.
Urine Test
Urine tests use strips that change color based on AcAc concentration in your urine. AcAc is a ketone body found in the urine as well as the blood, although at lower levels than BHB. Urine tests become less accurate over time. As your body becomes more efficient at converting ketones into fuel, you will begin excreting less and less AcAc in your urine.
Michael Brandt, Co-founder of H.V.M.N.
We’re not a keto diet company. We believe that everyone can improve their metabolic health by spending more time with elevated ketones.
The Ketone Experience is a Spectrum.
For most, spending some time fueling with ketones—not all, not zero—is the optimal state for metabolic health. Your lifestyle choices can raise ketone levels, helping you reach your unique goals.
The Health Optimizer
Naturally elevates ketones by dabbling with intermittent fasting, exercises daily, and avoiding carbs at breakfast and lunch. She drinks ketones as part of her daily health regimen and to stay sharp at work.
The Athlete
Follows a metabolically demanding training schedule, naturally elevating ketones by depleting carb stores. Before workouts or competitions, he drinks ketones for endurance and cognitive clarity, and to support recovery.
The Keto Dieter
Follows a strict low-carb eating plan to manage weight and sustain elevated ketone levels 24/7. She also drinks ketones for on-demand energy or to elevate ketones after taking a break from her diet.
