When Yusef Q. first heard about an Ironman triathlon, he knew he wanted to try it.

The collegiate soccer player knew someone who signed up for an Ironman and the idea of pushing his body in three different kinds of sport was intriguing. So, he and a friend signed up for their first half-Ironman. They learned how to swim (the right way). They learned how to bike. They ran. Once the triathlon was complete, they swore they’d never do it again.

Now, Yusef has done six half-Ironman races and three full Ironmans.

The approach to Ironmans was much like his life outside of sport. Yusef is someone of commitment, camaraderie and hard work—things you’ll find among triathletes in spades. An example: last year, Yusef traveled 100,000 miles for work and still found pools and bikes and tracks on which to train, ensuring he didn’t miss any training miles due to the miles in the air.

During the course of his training and meeting other triathletes, Yusef learned about ketones and the idea of fat adaptation. While he knew full-blown ketogenic dieting wasn’t a fit for his personal needs, Yusef tried H.V.M.N. Ketone Ester because he understood the power of ketones to fuel his race.

The result? He set a personal record that Ironman.

In training, Yusef uses H.V.M.N. Ketone Ester for his most-intense training sessions that simulate race day; think 4 - 5 hour bike rides. During races, the mental aspect shouldn’t be undercut. Triathletes must learn how to use their brains to push their bodies to extreme limits. Not only is there a physical benefit for Yusef, but a mental one, too. Those work together.

Post-race, many triathletes will be nursing soreness for days. Not Yusef. He used H.V.M.N. Ketone Ester as a recovery tool after his half-Ironman (the one in which he notched a personal record), and the next day, he was totally fine. “When I’m not using H.V.M.N. Ketone Ester, I want to be using it,” he said.

Does Yusef seem like the kind of person who recovers, sits backs, and rests on their laurels? Didn’t think so.

Now that he has almost ten Ironmans under his belt, his next big goal is Kona—the Ironman World Championships. With his dedication to training, help from his coach, and support from his family, he’s confident he’ll get there. He’s pursuing the journey more than the destination.
